Most know by now – but Betty is no longer with me.
The bike that took me to my wedding, my honeymoon and on many other adventures has gone. I will certainly miss her.
Reason for getting rid of the XJR? Essentially it goes something like this; Taking her on a long trip was just becoming too much. As I didnt get the chance to take her long distance that often, when I did it just knocked me around too much. Just a 2-day run to Wollongong and back had me in all kinds of pain. It had just become too much. The total lack of wind protection was just the final straw.
So I had to say goodbye.
Introducing Merlin. He’s a 2002 Kawasaki ZZR1200. Big, comfy and has all kinda of power to spare. We took it for a weekend to Bathurst recently, and there is a few things that need doing. First up is the lousy excuse for pillion pegs. For a touring bike, it astounds me the Kwaka would put the same pegs on it that they do on the ZX10 and 12. So Gos is modifiying some pegs off an old Z750 to fit.
Next is the seat. If I can get hold of Typhoon – I’ll be getting him to fashion me up a new seat.
Also on the list is the pillion grab rails. The stock ones are terrible, with fairly harsh edges that leave Jess’s hands covered in blisters. Not sure what the solution for this yet – but I’m sure something will come up.
Lastly is the posibility of some kind of back rest. I’ve had a plan for a while now of making a zip-on cushion for the back of the ventura bag. I reckon it will work, its just a matter of how, and matching the zips.
So there you go. Pretty much all the mods that Betty had done to her, except this time I get all the wind protection if the big ZZR.
