Been off the bike
I’ve been off the bike for the last couple of weeks.
To be frank – I needed a break. I was loosing my mojo. I just wasnt enjoying it anymore.
Commuting everyday to work has been wearing thin. This year was my 4th year of commuting on the bike through a Canberra winter and its just not fun anymore.
So I was talking to iKe who reminded my that he still had his ’91 Celica taking up room at the visitor parking at his apartment block. Word were had, deals were done and then there was a half-shiny Celica parked in my driveway. Yes half-shiney. I’ll explain why….
At some point in the cars life the front half has been resprayed. The bonnet, the front bumper, the front guards, and the doors. They are all still rather shiny. The clear coat is (mostly) holding in there. However the rest was a different story. 20 years of sun and weather have taken their toll. The rook, rear guards, boot and bumper were faded beyond recognition. Essentially matt-red.
So out came the cutting compound and lambs wool drill bit. After 3 goes at the cutting compound the car started to get a bit of shine back. Then followed by a few coats of Turtle ICE wax – and now she’s starting to look good again (although all the stone chips stand out now 🙁 )
So now that it looks better, the rest of the car is going to need some work. There is a horrible leak from the power steering. Going by the research Ive done, it looks like it should just be one of the high-pressure lines between the pump and the steering rack. The clutch is going to need replacing. Its slips, and always at the wrong times. And the front brake discs need machining – one has got a bit of a warp to it.
Other than that – it should be a decent, fun commuter.
